Leddy Center for the Performing Arts
Leddy Center produced its first show in July of 1975 as the Epping Community Church Players, in order to raise money to buy the oil needed for the church to hold their services in the sanctuary instead of in the basement of the church. Elaine Gatchell was the choir director of the Epping Community Church then (and now) and continued to produce and direct one show each year to raise money not only for the church but for many organizations within the town such as the Ambulance Fund, and the Epping Fire Department.
The theater group also was the largest contributor in the state of New Hampshire to Heifer Project International, a non-profit organization that sends animals to hungry people all over the world where they reproduce and their owners share the offspring with neighbors. The name of the players changed when the group was gifted the permanent use of the second floor in the old Leddy Brothers building in 1984, and began expanding its offerings to include more productions, a concert series, classes and private lessons in the arts, as well as bringing arts assembly programs to schools in the greater area. The first production in the new space was “My Fair Lady”, held in July of 1985.
By 2008, Leddy Center was embarking on its 34th year producing quality shows and concerts in southeastern New Hampshire! It was early in 2008 that news regarding the sale of its Theatre facility arrived. Opportunity came to be when a large, modern theatre facility became available just 1 mile away. The new Leddy Center (at Ladd’s Lane) was established in time to close out our final two events of 2008!
In 2016, Leddy Center is celebrating its 42nd Season of bringing Broadway musicals and classic drama to our greater communities as a non-profit 501c3 NH Arts and Education Organization.
Director, Elaine Gatchell, has chosen Neil Simon’s hilarious comedy “The Star Spangled Girl” to open our 42nd Season in March! This classic comedy is about two underground magazine publishers and the flag-waving girl who moves in next door. Recapturing the feeling of the 60’s generation of protests, this story revolves around two radical journalists whose lives are radically disrupted by an earnestly patriotic young woman and self-described “religious follower of Sport Illustrated”.
Starring John Seymour as Norman Cornell, Dan Holmes as Andy Hobart, and Melissa Opalka as Sophie Rauschmeyer, this is one play you will love from beginning to end. Performances are March 11 through March 20, Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30pm and Sundays and one Wednesday, March 16, at 2:00pm. Sponsored in part by NHPTV and partially sponsored by Seacoast Coke and The Shark at 102.1 and 105.3FM, tickets are $20 and can be purchased online 24/7 at leddycenter.org, or by visiting or calling the box office at 603-679-2781, Monday through Friday. Subscription Series (one ticket for each of our four shows and one concert in our Season 2016) are still available for $90 (cash or check only please) through our boxoffice.
